Philly recording artist, producer, mentor, teacher, engineer, and CEO Steve Sxaks has proven
to be a major staple in the Philly and South Jersey Hip-Hop scene. “I’ve always been an
entertainer, I used to put on my own plays and do ‘stand up comedy’ for my family and peers.”
However, it wasn’t until the age of 12 when Sxaks picked up the guitar that he realized music
was his destined journey.
During high school Sxaks joined several bands as guitarist and drummer and toured with
hardcore band “Fruit Punch.” At age 18, upon the group’s split, he picked up the mic to focus on
rapping and by 19 was performing solo Hip-Hop tours. That wasn’t enough for the multifaced
entrepreneur, as he wanted to continue to strive and thrive. Sxaks felt it necessary to create a
‘home base’ for himself and other local artists and in 2009 along side his now partner Ethan
Mintz, opened up Marsten House Recordings. This opened many doors and created massive
opportunities for him including a business relationship with Big Philly who introduced Sxaks to
the world of battle rap and went on to judge some of Philly’s most notorious battles with major
legends. Ideally in 2010 Sxaks developed his now, worldly famed ‘Marsten House Cyphers’.
As role of mentor and teacher, Sxaks was responsible for the growth and development of many
adolescent artists at ‘Workshop Houston.’ During that time period he taught engineering and
music production and held cyphers and various performance opportunities for the youth. “I love
being creative and working behind the scenes to develop artists by either coaching them on
delivery or by producing music for them. The in’s and out’s and intricacies of marketing music is
a rush. Every time I’m involved in a new project, I feel a replenished love for music.”
Sxaks can recall meeting some of his influences including Sean Price, Jedi Mind Tricks, and
Reef The Lost Cauze at a show in Philly where they took time out to talk with him. “They were
so humble, that show made me really fall in love with Hip-Hop.” A decade later and Sxaks now
carries a respected resume with impressive accolades. He’s released 9 projects through
Marsten House Records, is radio host at UTM Radio, 10 years strong hosting Marsten House &
Cypher Circuit cyphers, continually recording music for major artists such as Slaine, Vinnie Paz,
Freeway, Jazz Fresh, and members of the Roots just to name a few, is featured in highly
acclaimed media and music outlets, has toured throughout the US and outside including
Canada and Europe, and sits on a plethora of industry panels and forums.
